Nankind’s founder and Executive Director, Audrey Guth, recently sat down with Nicole Servinis on Things to Know on CTV News to share the story behind Nankind, and why our Charity Auction, one of our most anticipated fundraisers, matters so much to the families we serve.
Audrey’s connection to this work goes back to grade 3, when her father was diagnosed with cancer and no one told her. She found out by overhearing her teachers, and carried that fear and confusion alone until he died three years later. Decades later, as a mother facing her own cancer diagnosis, she sat in a waiting room next to another mom and her young daughter and realized: that little girl needed support too. That moment became Nankind.
Today, we send trained Volunteer Angels into the homes of families facing a parent’s cancer diagnosis every week, giving parents room to rest and get to treatment, while helping children ask questions, share their feelings, and feel safe. We also provide healthy prepared meals, counselling, and online support groups, staying with families from diagnosis through recovery, completely free of charge.
For Audrey, our Charity Auction, running September 15 to October 9, is what makes that support possible. It’s what lets us say yes to the next family on our waitlist. With over 200 items up for bid, including a guitar signed by Taylor Swift, a Toronto Raptors Ultimate Experience for two, and five nights at the Fairmont Mayakoba in Mexico with return tickets for four, donated by the Air Canada Foundation, every bid helps a family like the ones Audrey has known both sides of.
“You get something you love, and a family gets support that will change the course of their cancer experience for the better,” Audrey shared.
